Contractors called for Moree hydrogen and ammonia production plant

MOREE businesses and members of the community are invited to meet the team behind the Good Earth Green Hydrogen and Ammonia project, a major plant construction planned west of Moree, with a chief purpose to have local businesses and contractors engaged.

A meet-the-project session will be held at Social Co House on Balo Street on Wednesday, November 13 from 3pm – 6.30pm and a drop-in session for the general public will be held the following day.

The meet-the-project session is chiefly for local businesses interested in getting involved as contractors, suppliers or service providers during the construction and operation of the hydrogen and ammonia production plant, known as GEGHA.

The Hiringa Project team, operations team, project partner Sundown Pastoral Co and senior management from principal contractor Dialog Fitzroy will be there to provide more detail on the project’s planning and procurement in the run-up to the planned commencement of construction in mid-2025.

Project manager Owen Hobbs said the meet-the-project session will be a great opportunity for local and regional businesses to connect with project decision-makers.

“GEGHA is a regionally based project and we want to encourage regional and local businesses to get involved,” Mr Hobbs said.

“We want to hear from people who have the skillset or services within their company that can help us construct and operate the facility.”

Employment and training

Mr Hobbs said the project is also working on training and development opportunities.

“while the majority of opportunities are likely better-suited to established businesses, we are also keen to support businesses to grow and develop the necessary capabilities,” he said.

“Beyond construction, we will require at least six skilled positions, based locally, to operate the plant, including one local traineeship.

Maintenance tasks, across a range of disciplines, will also be contracted locally, he said.

Community drop-in session

For interested members of the public, a separate session will be held at Social Co House on Thursday, November 14 from 10.30am to 1.30pm, when Hiringa team members will be on hand to provide an overview of the project and answer any questions.

What is GEGHA?

The GEGHA Project will use energy generated by a new solar farm on-site to power electrolysers that will split water to make Hydrogen.

While some hydrogen will be captured, compressed and stored, the majority will be used to make anhydrous ammonia via an ammonia plant.

‘Anhydrous’ means ‘free from water’ and the ammonia will be produced, stored, transported and used as a gas.

Up to 600 tonnes of anhydrous ammonia will be stored on-site and up to 4500 tonnes produced per annum for use as a fertiliser, primarily in cotton production.

The production and use of anhydrous ammonia production in the region will save more than 40,000 litres of diesel and almost 65,000km of dangerous goods movements across regional New South Wales each year.

Hydrogen produced by the project will also be used for on-farm conversion of static and mobile diesel motors or for heavy vehicle transport refuelling, generating large emissions savings for each new truck brought on to the road.
