Moree Scouts prepare for Australian Jamboree

EVERY four years, more than 10,000 Scouts from across Australia and the world meet for an unforgettable ten-day camp – the Australian Jamboree – and enjoy incredible activities, new challenges and endless opportunities.

To ensure north-west regional Scouts are properly prepared for the 2025 event, a four-day pre-jamboree camp last weekend opened the school holidays at Moree Showground – the home of the 1st Moree Scouts.

Activities included setting up new tents to be used at the jamboree and preparing and serving meals to each other.

Cub Scout trainee leader, Rhiannan Barr, said the Moree warm-up was the perfect preparation for next year’s Australian Jamboree, to be hosted by Scouts Queensland from January 6-15 at Maryborough Showgrounds and Equestrian Park.

“The Australian Jamboree (see image in photo gallery) is an experience like no other, where lifelong friendships are made,” Rhiannan said.

“We also had problem-solving activities at the pre-jamboree camp and processed return-and-earn containers, with the funds spent at local cafés.

“We visited the artesian hot pools twice – the weather was too nice to miss the opportunity,” she smiled.

A scavenger hunt included visits to Moree Tourism, fire station, police station, Moree Historical Society’s Plains Museum, Moree RSL Regional Military Museum, Harvey Norman and various local cafes.

“We would like to extend our thanks to these organisations and business houses for their support,” Rhiannan said.

“The Scouts learned a lot and were all buzzing with talk about the scavenger hunt for quite a while.

“The group was also treated to an amazing performance by Crossroads 2421 church group from Melbourne,” she said.

“This performance showcased the amazing traditional dances of the Pacific islands. The audience was asked to join in and the Scouts jumped at the opportunity. It was a truly amazing experience for all of us.”

The 1st Moree Scouts are always looking for new members, volunteers and leaders.

Rhiannan said now more than ever, it is crucial for youth to have strong role models and extra-curricular activities focusing on gaining life skills and a value system, building a better world and playing a constructive role in society.

Moree Scouts meet at 6.30pm each Tuesday at Moree Showgrounds.

“Moree Scouts also say a special thank-you to the staff of the Showgrounds. They were amazingly accommodating to everyone’s needs,” Rhiannan said.
