Moree secondary school leaders visit Government House and State Parliament

STUDENT leaders from Moree Christian School and Moree Secondary College last week visited the NSW Parliament and Government House as part of the NSW Secondary School Student Leadership Program.

The program invites school captains and student leaders from across New South Wales to visit the Parliament of NSW to develop leadership skills.

Isabelle Kelly and Joshua Rigby from Moree Secondary College and Moree Christian School’s Katie Lee and Liam McClure travelled to Sydney on Tuesday.

Governor of New South Wales, Her Excellency Margaret Beazley, greeted the students at Government House.

“One of the things I do when we have the school leaders’ program at Government House, is encourage young people across the state to think about coming to the regions at some part of their professional lives,” Her Excellency said.

“If I can get that story out there, it is going to land with some students, and the more it lands, the better,” she said.

Students heard from Members and Parliamentary Officers, viewed proceedings from the public galleries and visited Government House to meet with Her Excellency.

The student leadership program has now been running for more than 20 years.

Schools are invited in their state electorates across separate dates during Term 1 and 2. The program is only held on Sitting Days so that students are able to meet their local member of Parliament.

Moree Christian School teaching and learning co-ordinator, Emily Cobb, said the Parliament of NSW and Government House jointly conduct a civics and citizenship program for Year 12 captains and student leaders from all New South Wales secondary schools.

“It gives the student leaders the opportunity to develop their knowledge of our system of government, parliamentary proceedings, the role of members of parliament, and the role of the Governor of NSW,” Ms Cobb said.
