Now, after more than 20 years in retail business, Archie and Rhonda Karam are planning their next chapter.
As owners of Balo Square Newsagency, Archie and Rhonda have placed their hugely popular business on the market as they look forward to well-earned retirement.
Archie, originally from Sydney, and Rhonda, Moree born and raised, took ownership of the thriving newsagency in 2004.
Previously, Archie worked across various roles in the retail and hospitality industries, while Rhonda built her career in administration.
“We took over Balo Square Newsagency with the goal of building a strong, sustainable business,” Archie said.
‘Our aim was to purchase an established operation and continue its legacy, work for ourselves, support our family, and provide a valued service to the community.
“We originally planned to stay for just four to five years, and are proud to say we have remained for more than twenty years,” he smiled.
Archie and Rhonda said the newsagency game is about much more than selling newspapers.
Balo Square Newsagency is arguably one of Moree’s biggest giftware and stationery stores as well as an agent for The Lott.
“We offer magazines and print products, lottery products, cards, gifts, stationery, toys, and lifestyle items that appeal to a broad customer base,” Rhonda said.
“These additions have helped transform newsagencies into convenient, multi-service retail hubs. “Today, there is a strong emphasis on convenience, customer service, and creating an engaging in-store experience.”
A key element of Balo Square Newsagency is being Moree’s only over-the-counter provider of lottery sales – and the store is renowned for being a ‘lucky’ lottery and Lotto outlet.
“Over the years, the store has celebrated the sale of numerous major winning tickets,” Archie said. Highlights include 17 significant prizes, ranging from $100,000 to $15 million, including Division One Lotto wins.
“Most recently, we sold a Division One $100,000 Lucky Lotteries prize, alongside many other notable wins,” Archie said.
“It’s always rewarding to be part of these moments, especially knowing the positive impact they have on people in our local community.”
The modern-day newsagency is now a diverse, service-oriented business that requires adaptability and a strong connection to the local community – and Archie and Rhonda have filled that role admirably for the past 22 years.
Friendships with customers have been strengthened as well as created during that time.
“One of the best aspects of owning and managing a shop like this is the people,” Rhonda smiled. “Over the years, many of our regular customers have become familiar faces and, in many cases, good friends.
“The daily chats, shared stories, and sense of connection have been incredibly rewarding. We’ve also enjoyed being part of the community, helping customers, celebrating their wins, and providing a reliable local service.
“It’s that combination of relationships, community involvement, and day-to-day interaction that has made the experience so special,” Rhonda said.
Now, after 22 years, Archie and Rhonda are ready to slow down considerably.
“We have decided to sell as we move into the next stage of our lives,” Archie said.
“Retirement is calling, and after many rewarding years in business, we’re looking forward to taking a step back and enjoying more time with family and friends.”
