Artisans of the New England book launch at free Moree event June 20

PHOTOGRAPHER Jim A. Barker will launch his new book showcasing 75 artisans and their studios from across the New England region of New South Wales at Moree’s newly-created Social SEEN Gallery at Social Co House next week.

The free event on Friday, June 20, will feature a book reading by the author from Artisans of the New England, a gallery viewing and mixer for attendees, and live music afterwards.

Cocktails and canapes will be available during the event.

Artisans of New England is a 200-page, full-colour hardcover book featuring more than 250 photographs taken between 2022 and 2024. The book showcases 75 artisans and their studios across the New England region of New South Wales.

“What I noticed in researching subjects for Artisans is that our region’s creativity feels like a secret,” Barker said.

“Maybe that’s because artists are famously terrible at self-promotion, or maybe it’s because they live in the shadow of our region’s main exports, beef and grain.

“My hope is for Artisans to address this secret in some small way, potentially attracting more artists to the region or perhaps encouraging those who live here to take up a craft, a practice, an artform, and to make the New England known for its rich creativity and not just its rich soils,” he said.

Printed on luxurious 160gsm silk paper, Artisans of New England – a collection of artisans and artists photographed over the course of 18 months – is a visual and tactile experience not to be missed, Jule Jarner said.

She said Barker’s photographic essay celebrates the hidden, creative heart of the New England district, and features local potters, painters, sculptors and creatives at work.

“These artisans shape not just art, but identity and showcase the vibrant, often-overlooked artistry that defines our region,” Jule said.

“Jim A. Barker is a photographer with a penchant for reflecting the essence of life, character and beauty in all its forms.”

Jule invites attendees to enjoy meaningful conversation with fellow creatives and explore the incredible Artisans of New England collection, brought to life by Barker through his stunning photography exhibition and beautifully-crafted book.

The book launch will be the first event held at Social Co House’s newly-created space, Social SEEN Gallery.

“The space encourages people to gather in celebration of creative common interests, help create bonds and foster a sense of belonging,” Jule said.

“The studio is a friendly, collaborative environment for local artists, children, families, and anyone who wants to get creative – a place where we can share stories, create together, and support one another,” she said.
