BROKEN Hill High School students will be able to commemorate those who served in the Vietnam War when an honour board is installed at the school.
Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton and Nationals’ candidate for Parkes Jamie Chaffey today met with Broken Hill High School Parents and Citizens Association Vice President Margaret Burrowes and local Vietnam veteran Alan Turner to discuss the project which has been funded under the Saluting Their Service (STS) Commemorative Grants Program.
“I’d like to congratulate the Broken Hill High School P&C Association for their dedication to commemorating Australia’s wartime history and recognising our local service men and women,” Mr Coulton said.
“The P&C received a $3,680 grant to install the Vietnam War Honour Board which will be a great visual reminder for students to commemorate all those who served in the war from Broken Hill.
“This is a worthwhile project which I’m sure will play a key role in the school’s future Anzac Day and Remembrance Day commemorations.”
Brewarrina RSL Sub-Branch also received a $10,000 grant under this round of the STS Program to construct a memorial statue and update an honour board to commemorate ADF personnel.
The Nationals’ candidate for Parkes Jamie Chaffey said it’s great to see local community organisations benefit from these grants.
“I know that towns throughout the Parkes electorate are proud of their military history, so I’m pleased that groups like the P&C and RSL sub-branch can undertake projects to honour that local history,” Mr Chaffey said.
“I think it’s important for our wartime history to be preserved so that future generations can remember the sacrifice of those men and women who have served from our communities.”
The Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants Program is designed to commemorate the service and sacrifice of Australia’s service personnel in wars, conflicts and peace operations, and their families.
Grants of up to $10,000 are available for community-based commemorative projects and activities.
The STS Program is an ongoing program, with 2024-25 Batch 2 applications currently open until 3 October 2024. Batch 3 applications will open on 4 October 2024 and will close on 5 February 2025.
