THERE’S horsepower in the morning and horses in the afternoon – Fathers’ Day in Moree on Sunday offers everything a dad could wish for on his one big day of the year.
Fathers’ Day starts with the Moree Motor Trade Expo and Show & Shine at Jellicoe Park, traditionally held in conjunction with Moree Markets.
The motoring expo brings together an amazing collection of vehicles from across New South Wales and interstate, making it one of the biggest – if not the biggest – vehicle-meets in the north-west.
The huge morning of horsepower, Duco buffing and engine idling draws thousands of people from across the region, with plenty to see and plenty to do.
Music will play long and loud, courtesy of DJ, Greg “The Hat” Henry, with kids’ tattoos and face-painting free by Lexi’s Styles.
A trophy presentation will be held at around 1pm, with a $500 cash prize for Most Outstanding Vehicle displayed.
The motoring morning, sponsored by V6 Conversions Moree in conjunction with Black Truck Sales, Tyrepower Moree, Tait Toyota and Nissan, Diesel Gas Moree, Shannon’s Insurance, Moree Auto Electrics, Tait Ford, Hill Fitzsimmons and Subaru, FMBC Moree, Powermaster Batteries and National Ag, and Thomas Lee Motorcycles, ties in perfectly with the Moree Markets and flows to the Moree Race Club’s Grays Online Moree Cup meeting in the afternoon.
The Moree Markets is always a huge day out for hundreds of Moree residents and visitors, and Fathers’ Day is traditionally the biggest of them all, with the motor vehicle exhibition filling Jellicoe Park to absolute capacity.
It’s a car lover’s mecca that draws visiting exhibitors displaying everything from vintage vehicles to hot rods, motorcycles, mud bombs, trucks, tractors, motorbikes and everything in between.
The main walkway through Jellicoe Park will also swell to capacity with market stalls selling a huge variety of goods
There will be a variety of treasures, local craft and jewellery, plants and homewares, poultry, delectable foods and coffee, fresh produce, and entertainment and music.
When the engines have died down to a soft idle and stall-holders pack everything away, visitors and locals are encouraged to attend the Moree Race Club’s biggest meeting of the year, featuring the 1400m Grays Online Moree Cup and 950m Westpac Rescue Helicopter Moree Town Plate.
There are eight races, sponsored by Moree Services Club, B&W Rural, Boland Petroleum, Orica and McGregor Gourlay, offering $300,000 prize money.
The club on Tuesday received 157 nominations for the eight-race card, including 25 entries in the $55,000 Moree Cup (1400m).
The $35,000 Moree Town Plate (950m) received 17 nominations.
“We’re in for a big day of racing,” club president Rob Mather said.
“Horses, trainers and owners from across New South Wales and Queensland vie for exceptional prize money and bonuses at what is one of our biggest meetings of the year,” he said.
Final fields will be declared at 9am, Thursday, August 29.
