Free Moree community event: Menopause is not a dirty word

SEATS are filling fast for a free HealthWISE community event in Moree focused on the stages of menopause.

The event, aimed at “unpacking the mysteries and myths of menopause”, will be held at Moree Town and Country Club on Thursday, February 20, with bookings essential via the QR code below.

Attendees are requested to arrive at 5.30pm for a 6pm start, with the presentation expected to run for about three hours.

Guest speakers include Dr Callum Fealy, from Gwydir Medical in Moree, dietician Dr Amy Ashman, physiotherapist Alex Valeontis and mental health clinician Lisa Staples.

HealthWISE health promotion and wellness officer Emma Knights said the information session aims to assist attendees and their families with valuable insights, open discussions, strategies and support.

“Guests will be able to ask questions and get valuable information around services and support,” Lisa said.

“Places are limited and already registrations are half-full, with seating limited.”

RSVPs are required by Wednesday, February 12.

Dr Fealy, a menopause-trained doctor with five years’ experience in the field, will talk about perimenopause and menopause care, as well as dispel a few myths.

“In my experience providing peri/menopause care for the last five years, the greater barrier to adequate care is lack of awareness amongst women of just what the perimenopause and menopause are,” Dr Fealy said.

“this includes the fact that symptoms can start in the late 30s, as well as the short- and long-term health and social consequences of not getting adequate treatment.

“The other massive factor is the misconception menopause hormone therapy (MHT) increases breast cancer risk.

“This has now been well and truly proven to be untrue but is sadly ingrained in popular belief,” he said.

“Gold standard MHT prevents cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.

“It also treats brain fog, irritability, poor sleep, heavy and irregular periods, mood disturbance, hot flashes, aches and pains, soft tissue injury and bladder and genital symptoms.

“This in turn has positive social and economic flow-on, such as preventing workforce drop-out and marriage break-up,” Dr Fealy said.
