FREE: Rising Sun Film Society presents Merri-May Gill’s WHIP, REV & BARREL

AFTER 20 years of presenting films from around the world, Moree’s Rising Sun Film Society will this month screen a film much closer to home.

Moree film-maker Merri-May Gill, from Two Dog Films, premiered her masterpiece, WHIP, REV & BARREL at Pallamallawa War Memorial Hall in November to rave reviews.

Now it’s Moree’s turn – and entry is free.

Merri-May is looking forward to the free screening on Sunday, February 23. She said Rising Sun Film Society has helped fund applications to try and get WHIP, REV & BARREL screened at international and domestic film festivals.

“These festivals are in some Australian capital cities as well as other places around the world, like Cannes, the UK and Canada,” Merri-May said.

“In return, I’m very happy for the society to make it free entry to attend this special screening.

“It helps more people find out about the Rising Sun Film Society, and the other films they’ll screen throughout 2025.”

Merri-May worked with well-known locals Julie Denyer, Lisa Whibley and Anna Heitzmann and showcased on film their at-times extreme weekend adventures.

Merri-May spent most of 2024 creating the documentary about the highs, and occasional lows, shared by Anna, Lisa and Julie, and adds aspects and sidelights of the girls’ adventurous sports.

Julie is right at home on a trail bike at events like the Upper Horton Pony Express Enduro; Anna barrel-races across New South Wales and Queensland at premier rodeo events and Lisa knows how to crack a whip, and then some.

“These are things you would normally never find out about, unless you follow them around with a camera,” Merri-May smiled.

Jackie Appleby said Rising Sun Film Society was thrilled to show a film so close to home, and featuring local stars who are fully entrenched in diverse pastimes.

“Many people enjoyed this movie when shown at Pally, and would love to experience it again, and those who missed out can enjoy it for the first time,” Jackie said.

“We are so thankful to be able to support Merri-May and her wonderful cast.”

WHIP, REV & BARREL shares why three rural Australian women love their “slightly dangerous passions” so much.

Join Lisa the bullwhip-cracker, Julie the enduro motorbike racer and Anna the barrel-racer on their roller-coaster ride of high adventure, occasional ebbs, and some unexpected surprises.
