CULTURAL festival, Onam, will be celebrated in Moree at the Town and Country Club on Saturday.

Onam, a 10-day celebration in India’s southern state of Kerala, commemorates New Year’s Day and is also recognised as the harvest festival.

While predominantly a Kerala festival, regions in other states, including Uttar Pradesh (Balia and Baway), Gujarat (Bharuch) and Maharashtra also honour its significance, while Malayalis or Keralites across the world celebrate.

The family-friendly afternoon will bring people together to enjoy one of India’s most vibrant cultural events.

Everyone is invited to experience the spirit of Onam through lively cultural performances, traditional dance, fun family games and light refreshments.

Whether visitors are familiar with Onam or discovering it for the first time, the event offers an opportunity to learn, connect and celebrate together.

Onam will also be celebrated next Wednesday, September 10, at Whiddon residential aged care facility.

International registered nurses at Whiddon will host a Onam festival for residents with traditional dress, dancing and games from 10.30am.

There is plenty happening in Moree this weekend, including Moree Rugby Union Club grand-finals at Weebolla Ovals on Saturday and Moree Boars Rugby League Club’s grand-finals at Boughton Oval on Sunday.

The launch of Moree and District Historical Society’s Water Room will be held on Saturday, from 9.30am until 12.30pm and the Onam Festival will be held between 2pm and 5pm at Moree Town and Country Club.

The Fathers’ Day Markets and Show and Shine will be at Jellicoe Park on Sunday, from 8am until around 1pm – just in time to head to Boughton Oval for the Group 4 rugby league grand-finals, featuring Moree Boars in three grades – ladies tackle, second-grade and first-grade.
