Kids roll up for first come-and-try night

IT was hot, muggy with the threat of storms about – but that didn’t stop nearly 50 kids arriving en masse to try out Moree’s new cycling venue at the old velodrome site on Thursday afternoon.

Rebooted and rebranded as Moree Riders’ Track under the governance of Moree Riders’ Club, the venue launched the first come-and-try day under trying conditions.

Such was the event’s success, an extra day has been added to this year’s schedule.

Club president Steel Sutton was amazed by the roll-up.

“We had 47 kids turn up, an incredible number considering the conditions,” he said.

“The committee has decided to add a fourth night, due to the success of our opening night and we’ve added Thursday, November 28, to our calendar.”

Riders braved hot. Muggy conditions and the storms dodged Moree.

“We were in two minds all afternoon about holding the event because of the heat and predicted rain,” he said.

“Anything like this can’t be held if the temperature gets to 37 degrees, but that dropped and the storms eased off.

“It was an incredible response for our first event like this,” he said.

Sutton said come-and-try days will be held again on November 14,  21 and 28.

“We will hold three more afternoons for riders to come and have a look, and try out the facility,” he said.

Sutton said Moree Riders’ Track will initially cater for mountain bikes and BMX bikes.

“All riders must bring a full-face helmet, enclosed shoes and a water bottle. All ages are welcome, and kids under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult,” he said.

“They can use motorbike helmets, purchase BMX-specific helmets from Chris at Thomas Lee or borrow a helmet from the club.”

Requirements include an AusCycling license, prior to registration or on the night.

Licensed registration can be trialled free of charge for four weeks.
