LANESCAPE, an exciting public art project set to illuminate the Goondiwindi CBD for at least the next five years, has the full support of Goondiwindi Regional Council.
The project, Illuminate the Flow, is an innovative night-time video installation that projects animated artworks onto Goondiwindi water towers, adding a dynamic new feature to the Goondiwindi Region’s vibrant public art scene.
Goondiwindi mayor Lawrence Springborg said the installation will not only attract visitors, but also enhance local liveability and community safety.
“Lanescape had a hugely successful launch of this project at their festival last year, and it is a fantastic addition to our region’s extensive arts and tourism offerings, which include Lanescape’s popular Bowen Lane street art and the region’s evolving Art Trail,” Cr Springborg said.
“The nature of this project, being viewed only at night-time, means it also encourages overnight stays for visitors to our region.
“This benefits our accommodation, hospitality and retail sectors, which in turn support other local small business and helps our community to thrive.”
The projected artworks can be seen from multiple locations through the town, including the Civic Centre, the Goondiwindi Cinema and the OK Milk Bar, creating a safer and more vibrant night-time atmosphere for residents and visitors.
Lanescape successfully secured more than $115,000 in external funding for the project.
Council also supports the project by covering some operational costs for power and internet, which amount to about $2000 per year.
An agreement is in place for the duration of the five-year-warranty of the assets only, with no commitment to replacing the assets.
Lanescape will manage all other asset maintenance and service expenses.
Council’s support is in addition to an annual $12,000 allocation towards a new Lanescape artwork installation and $3000 towards its annual festival.
Illuminate the Flow will run nightly from sunset, featuring artworks from local artists including Euraba Artists, Goondiwindi Photography Club, Rachel Walker, as well as Tim Bateup and Ian Tremuwen.
The artworks will be updated regularly, with their digitisation and animation supported by local sponsorships.
Local sponsors for 2024-25 include the Vern Kleinschmidt Fund, Black Truck and Ag, Foodworks Goondiwindi, Insight Business Services, Total Ag, and Wilson Farming.
Sponsorship opportunities will open up each year to new businesses, and Lanescape encourages future sponsors to get in touch early, as these opportunities are in high demand.
Cr Phil O’Shea holds Council’s portfolio for Arts and Culture and thanked the local businesses and residents whose support has been invaluable in making the installation a reality.
“This remarkable light show project has been in development for several years and is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Lanescape committee,” Cr O’Shea said.
Special thanks also go to Roxana Kingston, Tracey Jensen and Illuminart, who have painstakingly digitised and animated the selected artworks for the project.
“I also want to particularly thank the New Dynasty Chinese restaurant – if they hadn’t come on board, none of this would have been possible.”
The project is jointly funded by the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal and the Flexible Funding Grant, jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
