Last come-and-try day for 2024 this Thursday

ANOTHER come-and-try day will be held at the new-look Moree Riders’ Track on Thursday, November 28.

The facility, at the old velodrome site at the end of Endeavour Lane east of Taylor Oval, has been completely revitalised by the newly-formed Moree Riders’ Club, with the help of a group of volunteers and local contractors who donated time and machinery to make it all happen.

The come-and-try nights began earlier this month and have consistently drawn 40-50 kids and twice as many parents and carers each week.

Thursday will be the final come-and-try event this year, said club president Steele Sutton, who is busy organising a club night schedule for 2025. The come-and-try days have exceeded expectations.

“I’m blown away  by it all – the numbers have been fantastic and consistent each week,” Sutton said.

The new venue will initially cater for mountain bikes and BMX bikes, with all riders required to bring a full-face helmet, enclosed shoes and water bottle.

““All ages are welcome. We have riders in their 20s, 30s and 40s as well as kids as young as four, with those under 16 to be accompanied by an adult,” Sutton said.

Requirements include an AusCycling license – prior to registration or at the come-and-try event, where club officials will help with the details. Licensed registration can be trialled free for four weeks.

“If new kids and their parents like what’s happening, they can get a full license for next year when we start the new season,” Sutton said.

“Children must have adult supervision and mountain bikes and BMX bikes are welcome.”

The club also has spare bikes and helmets available as well, courtesy of St Philomena’s School and teacher Dan Church.

“Dan and the school have been restoring donated bikes for kids that may not have a bike to use,” Sutton said.

A sausage sizzle and refreshments will be available for purchase on Thursday.

Club nights will commence next year.

“The committee will gauge the interest of parents and work out the best possible times for kids to attend club nights,” Sutton said.
