THE galaxies have become a whole lot louder – and a lot more scandalous – with the news Moree Arts Community Theatre will take to the stage at Moree Services Club this week with a brand new offering.
Robots+Rockets, directed by the possibly unhinged Stevie Drenkhahn, is full of high-voltage hedonism, sci-fi sass and high-energy hilarity.
MACT, the team that brought The Sound of Music to Moree last year to wide, critical acclaim, has gone full circle with Robots+Rockets.
While The Sound of Music led a spellbound audience through the hills of Austria during World War II, Robots+Rockets – a vaudeville-style romp – travels at high, unfiltered speed through deep space.
“It’s naughty, it’s noisy, and definitely not for the convent-bound,” Stevie grinned.
“We’ve sent the nuns to a convent far, far away – this time, the only thing ‘holy’ is the sheer amount of fishnets and chrome.
“This show is funny, fast-paced, a little bit risqué and very entertaining,” she said.
Robots+Rockets stars Stevie Drenkhahn, Rachel Cubis, Jayne McDouall, Jacqualyn Drenkhahn, Steve McPherson, Besse Havea and Andrew O’Neill in a chaotic cocktail of singing, dancing and acting.
The new show, over two big nights this Friday and Saturday, March 27-28, is flashy and fleshy, with dazzling, jaw-dropping costumes, plenty of humour, and just a touch of salacious side-dressing.
“I’ve had a lot of fun directing this one – these vaudeville shows are fun and flashy, and perfect for a night out with friends,” Stevie said.
“Coming off the back of The Sound of Music . . . well, it’s not really comparable and a completely different show.
“The Sound of Music is a serious piece of musical theatre, and for an amateur theatre group, I’m proud to say we absolutely nailed it.
“Robots+Rockets is not serious theatre, it’s just pure amateur entertainment at its comedic best,” she said.
“Performers in these shows really love to engage with the audience, so if you’re up for some audience participation, come along.
“It is an adults-only event, as the show is held at the club with bar facilities available.
“There are a few naughty, space-themed jokes and gestures, but nothing that would make my Nana blush too much – and she’s pretty posh,” Stevie laughed.
