MOREE Lions Club will tomorrow blow out 70 candles at a special lunch at Moree Services Club, and the club has donated $4000 as part of birthday bash celebrations.
Moree Services Club board president Garry Maidens said Moree Lions Club was a local institution.
“Moree Lions is a fantastic organisation, with volunteers who work tirelessly for our community. Moree Services Club is proud to help in any way we can,” Mr Maidens said.
“We generally make about a dozen donations a year to different organisations, ranging in different amounts, and it’s all the little amounts that help.”
Lions spokesperson Steve Long said the donation will be well utilised.
“We have a lot of community projects in the pipeline, and this donation will go a long way to getting those projects happening,” Mr Long said.
“The Moree Services Club is well-known for supporting community organisations and Moree Lions Club is ever so grateful for this donation.”
Moree Lions Club was formed in 1954 and immediately began raising funds for local causes and organisations.
The amount of money raised by Moree Lions during the past seven decades and returned to the community is inestimable – but conservatively runs into millions of dollars.
One recipient over the years is Moree’s best-loved service provider, Gwydir Industries.
Gwydir Industries board president Bill Crawford congratulated Moree Lions on 70 fabulous years of service to the community.
“We at Gwydir Industries congratulate Moree Lions Club for 70 years of important community service to Moree and district,” Mr Crawford said.
“Moree Lions have been a constant support for Gwydir industries since our organisation was formed more than 60 years ago.
“There has been many projects completed at our work where members of the Lions Club provided money and labour to get jobs done, and every year, without fail, the Lions club has donated money to Gwydir Industries,” he said.
“It is not only the financial support that has been so important. Also knowing such a great organisation has our interest at heart, as part of their work, is encouraging and uplifting.
“Again, congratulations to all volunteers involved in Moree Lions who continue to champion the cause of volunteer work in the Moree community,” Mr Crawford said.
Moree Lions Club has a rich and vibrant history dating back seven decades.
Renowned for its contribution to the community and its unwavering commitment to service, Moree Lions Club has been a cornerstone of local philanthropy, fostering a spirit of unity and support among its members and the wider community.
The club was formed 70 years ago, inspired by the global mission of Lions Clubs International to empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace, and promote international understanding.
The Moree club’s foundation was driven by a group of dedicated local residents who recognised the need for a structured organisation to address community issues and projects.
Moree Lions member Beth Hearn said many former members have been invited to tomorrow’s 70th anniversary dinner.
“We have been in touch with a lot of people who were involved with Lions locally and many are coming back for our birthday lunch. We expect about 70 to 100 people to attend,” Beth said.
