THE long-standing tradition of the deb ball will once again bring the Moree community together as young people prepare to step confidently into adulthood at the Moree Masonic Debutante Ball on Saturday, September 19 at Moree Services Club.
An information session for young girls thinking about making their debut will be at the Moree Masonic Centre Hall on Helber Street tomorrow night, Monday, May 18 at 6pm.
Ball co-ordinator Gwanita Hill invites aspiring debs and their families to attend the information evening.
She said preparation for the ball begins well before the big night, with participants spending approximately eight weeks rehearsing and working together in the lead-up to the ball.
“The weeks of preparation often create strong friendships and teamwork among the debutantes and their partners, all culminating in a special evening of elegance, entertainment and celebration,” Gwanita said.
Hosted by Lodge Courallie Moree, the annual event continues a tradition that has been part of the district’s social fabric for generations.
Established in 1903, Lodge Courallie has proudly conducted debutante balls on and off throughout those years, helping to create lasting memories for local families while celebrating community spirit and tradition.
Gwanita said that although debutante balls are no longer as common as they once were, the occasion still holds a special place for many communities and families.
“In Moree, the event remains an important social occasion that highlights respect, presentation, confidence and connection,” Gwanita said.
She said the debutante ball is about far more than formal dress and dancing.
“It is also an opportunity for young ladies and gentlemen to develop confidence, form friendships and enjoy a memorable milestone surrounded by family, friends and supporters,” Gwanita said.
In recent years, the Moree Masonic Debutante Ball has typically featured between eight and 10 debutantes, continuing a tradition that has been maintained despite changing times and lifestyles.
“The event also serves as a reminder of the strong sense of community that continues to exist in Moree,” Gwanita said.
“Families, volunteers and supporters all play an important role in ensuring the evening is successful each year.”
From organising rehearsals and decorations to assisting participants throughout the preparation process, many people contribute behind the scenes to make the event possible.
Gwanita said the debutante ball creates a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone involved while strengthening community connections across generations.
“For many families, the evening becomes a cherished memory that is talked about for years,” Gwanita said.
The ball also offers the wider community a chance to come together socially and celebrate local young people as they reach an important stage in their lives.
Those attending the event can expect an evening filled with formal presentations, dancing, entertainment and plenty of memorable moments.
While traditions may evolve over time, the Moree Masonic Debutante Ball continues to demonstrate the enduring value of community events that bring people together.
“Through a combination of tradition, teamwork and celebration, the event remains an important part of the local social calendar and a proud continuation of a long-standing Moree tradition,” Gwanita said.
