Moree twilight Christmas races on target to be biggest yet

A committee strengthened by numbers and a series of working bees supported by local farmers, the Taunton family, has the 2024 Moree Ag Supplies and Steel twilight Christmas races on target to be another huge event.

The meeting, traditionally the biggest on the Moree turf calendar, draws thousands of people trackside each December.

Moree Race Club president Rob Mather said a committee bolstered by new blood and the help of the Taunton family has the 2025 edition on target to again draw the numbers.

When race-goers queue for entry at the December 14 signature meeting, they’ll notice quite a few changes.

“We have changed the main entry point to the racecourse to make it as seamless as possible for patrons, and the club thanks Gary Taunton and his family for supplying the heavy machinery and workforce to make this possible,” Mather said.

“We also have new committee members and have staged a couple of working bees to make sure everything is spot on for the meeting. It’s our biggest event of the year and takes a lot of co-ordinating and man hours to make sure it all comes together.”

The club’s new-look committee includes secretary Michelle Gobbert, president Rob Mather, vice-president Jenny Devney and treasurer Shane Taunton.

Sam Parkes, Rowan McGowan, Daniel Heffernan, Jock Jones and Charlie Bunce join clubman Gus Shelton as new committee members.

Day has found himself a dirt road from Brisbane to Moree to entertain Moree race-goers.

Out on the track, nearly $100,000 in prize money will be spread across six races.

The card includes two BM-50 races over 1200m and 1400m, a 950m class 2 plate, 1600m class 1-maiden plate, 950m maiden handicap and 1300m maiden plate.
