Moylan urges government to implement drought support

MEMBER for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan has again called on the NSW Government to urgently boost drought support with conditions dire across the electorate.

Mr Moylan delivered a Private Members’ Statement and a Notice Of Motion in NSW Parliament this week, outlining the tough conditions farmers and producers are facing.

“The Northern Tablelands has turned incredibly dry over the last few months,” Mr Moylan said.

“There are parts which have not received any rain at all and are reporting conditions are worse than they were in the 2019.

“Stock has been sold off and winter crops won’t be planted. Our farmers are holding on to what they do have left and are trying to supplement their feed and water supplies.

“The previous Coalition Government looked after farmers in that 2019 drought by offering financial assistance and transport subsidies for carting water, feed and livestock.

“More than half of the state is now classed as drought affected and the Minns Labor Government has sat on their hands.

“All they have done is offer mental health support and loans with an interest rate of just under five per cent but no one wants to go into more debt.

“The long-term forecast is grim with little to no rain forecast across the Northern Tablelands until at least November.

“I have called on the Minns Labor Government to introduce support through financial assistance, transport subsidies and invest in long term drought resilience for farmers and regional communities.”
