MORE than 50 people enjoyed morning tea and bingo at Pius X community hall on Monday to launch Seniors’ Week in Moree.
Coles and Woolworth vouchers, petrol cards, and meat trays and fruit and vegetable trays were won and collected as bingo master Ned Knox called out the numbers.
Events co-ordinator Lorraine Bartel said the morning was the start of a big week in Moree.
“This is the beginning of Seniors’ Week and the numbers here for bingo are really good – more than 50 here today, and some have come in from Mungindi,” Mrs Bartel said.
Tomorrow at Moree Community Library, the 2023 American sports comedy film, 80 for Brady, will be screened after a 10.30am morning tea.
The film, directed by Kyle Marvin and inspired by a true story, tells the story of four lifelong friends – played by Hollywood icons Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, and Sally Field – who travel to watch Tom Brady and his New England Patriots play in the 2017 Super Bowl.
On Wednesday, acclaimed actor and Gold Logie winner John Wood and vocalist, musician and front man from Rock around the World, Dave Allen, headline a Seniors’ Week luncheon at Moree Services Club, where the Moree Plains Senior Citizen of the Year will be announced.
There are five nominations for the award.
Wood and Allen will perform their stage show, Our Rock & Roll Journey, which takes the audience through four decades of music – the 1950s to the 1980s – and features hits and classics from a golden age of music.
“We’ve got 160 people booked in for the luncheon, which means we’re booked out – it’s been a great response,” Mrs Bartel said.
“The comedy rock and roll show will go from 11am for an hour, then the luncheon will take place from 12pm to 1pm, along with the presentation of Senior Citizen of the Year.
“Afterwards, there will be another hour of entertainment,” she said.
On Thursday, a few ends of social bowls will be played at Moree Services Club at 6pm, and bingo and lunch at Moree Care at 10am will be held on Friday.
“On Saturday, we’ll have a barbecue lunch out at our place on Gwyderfield Road,” Mrs Bartel said. We’ll have entertainment from the Moree Ukelele Band, and we’ve got about 80 people booked in for that.”
Mrs Bartel said Seniors’ Week in Moree would not be possible without generous donations from Pius X, Moree Community Library, Moree and District Services Club, Moree Services Bowling Club, Moree Care, Moree Lions Club, Moree Plains Shire Council, Regional Australia Bank and Moree Ukulele Group.
“All these people donate premises, their time and money to ensure the seniors can enjoy a great week with their friends,” Mrs Bartel said.
“Overall, responses for all our events for the week have been really good. We’re heading into a big week.”
