Riders welcome to Moree come-and-try day

THE Moree Riders Club will hold its inaugural come-and-try day at its new venue on Thursday, November 7.

Club president Steele Sutton invites cyclists of all ages and abilities to call down to the old velodrome site – rebranded Moree Riders’ Track – from 5pm.

Come-and-try days will be held every Thursday this month – November 7-14-21 – with a plan to set a firm program and dates next year.

“We’ve got a lot of work done to get the track up to scratch,” Sutton said.

“We held a recent working bee where local businesses and volunteers came along and helped enormously by providing manpower and machinery.”

Voluntary labour and machinery was kindly supplied by Rob Kemp Land Forming and Simon and Kylie Smith, from SG&KJ Smith. Moree Plains Shire Council and Todd Mitchell from Jock’s Hire have also been active behind the scenes helping to get the new venue on track.

“This has been a huge community effort to get things up and running, and already we’ve had kids at the track trying it out,” Sutton said.

He said Moree Riders’ Track will initially cater for mountain bikes and BMX bikes.

“All riders must bring a helmet, enclosed shoes and a water bottle. All ages are welcome, with kids under 16 years of age to be accompanied by an adult,” Sutton said.

Requirements include an AusCycling license – prior to registration or on the night – and helmet and enclosed shoes are mandatory. Licensed registration can be trialled free of charge for four weeks.

“We’ll run the come-and-tries this month and if people find that they like it, they can get a full license for next year,” Sutton said.

“Children must have adult supervision and mountain bikes and BMX bikes are welcome,” Sutton said.

The club will have spare bikes and helmets available as well, thanks to teacher Dan Church and St Philomena’s School.

“Dan and the school have been restoring donated bikes for kids that may not have a bike to use,” Sutton said.

A sausage sizzle and refreshments will be available for purchase at the come-and-try club nights.
