Rising Sun Film Society presents Last Film Show November 16

RISING Sun Film Society in Moree will screen Last Film Show, also known as Chhello Show, on Sunday, November 16 – the society’s last film for 2025.

Rising Sun Film Society’s Jackie Appleby said the society will also hold its AGM on December 2 at Moree Golf Club.

“We’ll start at 6pm and any interested people interested in joining Rising Sun Film Society are invited to come along to dining room area of the club,” Jackie said.

Last Film Show is a 2021 Indian Gujarati-language, coming-of-age drama film starring Bhavin Rabari, Bhavesh Shrimali, Richa Meena, Dipen Raval and Paresh Mehta.

The film is written and directed by Pan Nalin, whose catalogue includes Samsara and Valley of Flowers.

Bhavin Rabari won Best Child Artist at the 2023 National Film Awards for his portrayal of Samay in Last Film Show.
Bhavin Rabari won Best Child Artist at the 2023 National Film Awards for his portrayal of Samay in Last Film Show.

The film, running to 110 minutes, is semi-autobiographical, with director Pan Nalin born and raised in Adtala village in Saurashtra.

Samay, played by Bhavin Rabari, is a nine-year-old boy living with his family in a remote village in India.

He discovers films and the movie world for the first time and is fascinated.

Despite protests from his father, Samay goes to a rundown cinema every day to watch movies, and befriends the projectionist.

Living Arts Canberra says Last Film Show is “an ode to the magic of cinema and in particular the medium of 35mm film shown on carbon arc projectors”.

“This is a touching film, often raw but also tender. Its measured pace reflects the patterns of childhood for its young protagonist,” the Living Arts Canberra review says.

Last Film Show has rated 94 per cent on review website Rotten Tomatoes with an average rating of 7.7/10.

At the 2023 National Film Awards, Last Film Show won two awards – Best Feature Film in Gujarati, with Bhavin Rabari winning Best Child Artist.

Last Film Show also won the Audience Award at the World Cinema section of the 44th Mill Valley Film Festival in 2021 and the Golden Spike Award for Best Picture at the 66th Valladolid International Film Festival the same year.
