Run the Plains ready to rumble September 26-27

MOREE residents and visitors ran the plains ragged around this time last year, and they’ll be back to do it all over again – and then some – when Run the Plains 2025 jumps from the starting blocks on September 26-27.

The inaugural running event, last year named Community Event of the Year, drew more than 400 entrants across numerous categories.

This year’s edition, organised jointly by Moree Little Athletics, Tourism Moree and Moree Run Club, is expected to match that number.

Event co-organiser, Kelly James, said interest was building at a rapid rate.

“We have nearly 300 entrants registered so far, with some across multiple events,” Mrs James said.

“Run the Plains attracts a lot of people from out of town, and creates a lot of interest in town, and we are eager to see it bigger and better than last year.”

Run the Plains recently unveiled a website, with details and information about nominating for events.

Go to Moree Run the Plains 2025 to find out more, with Run the Plains merchandise and apparel also available.

Run the Plains will launch at around 5.30pm on Friday, September 26, in the Moree CBD with three events – the Kamilaroi K and Kamilaroi Kiddos’ Dash, both sponsored by S&L Girard Grader Hire, and the Community K Social Dash, sponsored by NewPave.

“The Kiddos’ Dash and Community K are new on the roster, with the Community K a purely social event for everyone,” Mrs James said.

Run the Plains 2025 is expected to be bigger than last year’s inaugural event that saw more than 400 competitors registered.

“The Kiddos’ Dash is a fun, short dash for our youngest runners, and perfect for creating first-race memories and big smiles.”

The following day, Saturday, September 27, five events will be held from 7am at the Tourism Moree headquarters on Alice Street.

Races include the Inland Vegetation Management Triple, McGregor Gourlay Agricultural Services Half Marathon, B&W Rural 10km, Grove Juice 5km and C&W Financial Services 3km.

“Runners in the Triple can tackle the 21.1km, 10km, and 5km back‑to‑back for a total of 36.1km, with time cut‑offs applying between races,” Mrs James said.

“The 21km half-marathon is three scenic laps through the heart of Moree, including a climb up our steepest hill. This is perfect for personal-best hunters and first‑time half-marathoners.

“The 10km run is two scenic laps along the Mehi River with a couple of honest inclines – perfect if stepping up in distance or chasing a fast 10km,” she said.

“Our 5km event is one lap, one shot – contestants can run, jog or power-walk their way through 5km of community cheer. It welcomes all abilities, with the perfect blend of competitive spirit and personal challenge.

“The 3km is a short and scenic loop along the riverbank – ideal for younger runners, first-timers, families, or anyone wanting to soak up the event atmosphere without the longer distances,” she said.

Mrs James said multiple sponsors have again come on board to support Run the Plains.

“The same sponsors from last year were all eager to jump on board again – Moree is such a generous town and our local businesses always get behind our local events,” Mrs James said.

For a list of all sponsors, events, and what will be happening across two big days in Moree, go to Moree Run the Plains 2025.

People not interested in lacing up the joggers and taking part in events, can volunteer to help out.

“We have two big days with plenty happening, and will need plenty of help to make sure everything runs to plan,” Mrs James said.

“If anyone has a bit of spare time up their sleeve and would like to help out, please go to our new website and register your interest.”
