Seekers founding member Keith Potger headlines Moree Seniors’ Festival

LAWN bowls, bingo, a popular recent movie, entertainment from The Seekers founding member Keith Potger and plenty of food – the week-long Seniors’ Festival this month in Moree has plenty on the menu at several venues around town.

With this year’s theme, Live Life in Colour, Seniors’ Festival in Moree opens with bingo and morning tea at Pius X community hall at 10.30am on Monday, March 9, with vouchers, petrol cards, meat packs and fruit and vegetable trays up for grabs.

Events co-ordinator Lorraine Bartel said the Pius X morning tea launches a big week in Moree.

“It’s always a great morning at Pius X with great food and great bingo prizes,” Lorraine said.

“The Seniors’ Festival is a great chance to catch up with friends and have a good time.”

Morning tea at Moree Community Library at 10.30am on Tuesday, March 10 features a screening of The Thursday Murder Club, starring Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Celia Imrie and Ben Kingsley.

The American production, based on the bestselling novel by Richard Osman, follows four elderly friends in a retirement village, who solve cold cases for fun.

“Tuesday at the movies has proved very popular over the last few years, with good attendances,” Lorraine said.

The principal Seniors’ Festival event in Moree will be held at Moree Services Club on Wednesday, March 11 from 10.15am, when a catered meal, entertainment and the announcement of the 2026 Moree Plains Shire Council Senior Citizen of the Year is announced.

Timeless entertainer Keith Potger will celebrate nearly 65 years of The Seekers with a nostalgic, heart‑warming tribute show.

With special moments honouring Judith Durham and a blend of classic hits and original ballads, Potger’s uplifting show invites audiences to relive cherished memories and celebrate the enduring joy of The Seekers’ legacy.

Potger’s appearance in Moree comes ahead of a busy few weeks for the 84-year-old, with follow-up tribute shows across New South Wales through to September.

“The year 2026 is shaping up to be busier than 2025. Is there no rest for the wicked,” Potger smiled.

Keith Potger, Judith Durham, Athol Guy and Bruce Woodley took the world by storm in the 1960s as The Seekers. They were named Australians Of The Year in 1967, the only group to achieve the honour.

Meanwhile, nominations are still open for the 2026 Moree Plains Senior Citizen of the Year Award.

Moree Plains Shire mayor, Susannah Pearse, said being named Senior Citizen of the Year is a special honour.

“It is one that recognises a lifetime of service and selflessness,” Cr Pearse said.

“There are so many senior citizens, in our community and our lives, that are deserving of this recognition, so I encourage everyone to put forward someone who would make for a worthy winner.”

Nominations for 2026 Moree Senior Citizen of the Year are open until 5pm, Friday, March 6.

Lawn bowls will get underway at Moree Services Club at 6pm on Thursday, March 12 and the following day, Moree Care will host bingo and lunch from 10am.

The Seniors’ Festival in Moree closes with a barbecue lunch at 363 Gwydirfield Road on Saturday, March 14, starting at 11am.

“Thursday night Bowls is a great opportunity for anyone to come along and have a fun night. We have bowls available and people to show newcomers how to play. We just ask for everyone to have their name in to play by 5pm,” Lorraine said.

“Friday at Moree Care is also a fun day with bingo, prizes and lunch and Saturday is a relaxing day, where Moree Lions Club cook the barbeque lunch and Moree Ukulele Band provide some great entertainment.

“Bookings are essential for the events, especially the Wednesday luncheon,” Lorraine said.
