ACCLAIMED actor and Gold Logie winner John Wood and vocalist, musician and front man from Rock around the World, Dave Allen, will perform in Moree next month during Seniors’ Week.
Wood and Allen will take the stage at the Seniors Week lunch at Moree Services Club on Wednesday, March 12 with their stage show, Our Rock & Roll Journey, which takes the audience through four decades of music – the 1950s to the 1980s – and features hits and classics from a golden age of music.
The matinee event, featuring a two-course meal, starts at 11am and also features the announcement of the 2025 Moree Senior Citizen of the Year.
Our Rock & Roll Journey is bookended by numerous events and activities showcasing Seniors Week in Moree, which this year runs from Monday, March 10 through to Saturday, March 15.
The week starts with a 10.30am morning tea and bingo at Pius X on March 10 and the following day, the 2023 American sports comedy film, 80 for Brady, will be screened at Moree Community Library after a 10.30am morning tea.
Film 80 for Brady, directed by Kyle Marvin and inspired by a true story, tells of four lifelong friends – played by Hollywood icons Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, and Sally Field – who travel to watch Tom Brady and his New England Patriots play in the 2017 Super Bowl.
On Thursday, March 13, a few ends of social bowls will be played at Moree Services Club at 6pm, with names needed by 5pm.
Bingo and lunch at Moree Care, with a 10am start, headline Friday, March 14.
Moree Seniors Week concludes on Saturday, March 15, with lunch and entertainment by Moree Ukulele Group at 363 Gwydirfield Road.
The week of activities and events, organised and co-ordinated by Moree Services Bowling Club secretary-treasurer, Lorraine Bartel, is expected to draw big numbers. Mrs Bartel has been involved in seniors’ festivals in Moree since about 1990 and said event attendance numbers have increased over the years.
“It has always been a busy week of activities,” Mrs Bartel smiled.
“Seniors have the opportunity to catch up with friends, while enjoying the many activities.
“We have seniors from the whole of the Moree Plains Shire area and they all look forward to it each year,” she said
Mrs Bartel said the Wednesday luncheon, where Moree Plains Shire Senior Citizen of the Year is announced, is the highlight of the week.
“This recognises our seniors for what they’ve achieved and volunteered for over the years, and many are still volunteering in many organisations,” she said.
Mrs Bartel said Seniors’ Week in Moree would not be possible without generous donations from Pius X, Moree Community Library, Moree and District Services Club, Moree Services Bowling Club, Moree Care, Moree Lions Club, Moree Plains Shire Council, Regional Australia Bank and Moree Ukulele Group.
“All these people donate premises, their time and money to ensure the seniors can enjoy a great week with their friends,” Mrs Bartel said.
Mrs Bartel, and her husband Rob, also provide the Gwydirville Road venue for lunch and entertainment on the last day of Seniors’ Week.
Bookings for all events are essential and can be made by contacting Lorraine on 0477 020895.
