SHE’S Emma Went now, but most people know her as the girl who fell off the horse.
Early one July morning in Moree eight years ago, Emma was preparing for a morning ride on her gelding, Norton.
Emma, an accomplished horsewoman, saddled Norton, checked the riding gear, and strapped on her helmet.
What happened next changed her life forever.
Emma fell from Norton and hit the ground hard – a shocking fall resulting in traumatic brain injury.
But the incredible work by first-responders from Moree Ambulance Service, staff at Moree District Hospital and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service team saved Emma’s life.
After eight years of mending and rehabilitation, Emma’s life is back on track – and she’s back on horses.
She was Emma Botfield back then, and in early 2022 married local electrician Kobi Went.
Kobi met Emma after her accident, thanks to a few Facebook exchanges.
“We knew of each other, but it all started when I sent Kobi a Facebook message in March, 2018. He reckons it must’ve been the brain injury that made me message him,” Emma laughed.
Kobi didn’t care much for horses, either, until Emma came along.
“He didn’t like horses, but I like horses, so we compromised and he built our stables,” Emma said.
In February last year, Emma and Kobi welcomed baby Lola.
“Lola is just like her mother and loves her animals,” Emma smiled.
Recently, Emma took part in a Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service promotional video to help showcase the incredible, live-saving work the organisation does on a daily basis.
Emma’s story premiered at the recent Tamworth Rescue Helicopter Ball at Tamworth Lookout, where she met the crew that airlifted her to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital that fateful day.
The video will also be played at the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service Moree Volunteer Support Group Charity Golf Day in Moree on Sunday, June 1, a huge fundraiser generously sponsored by Statewide Aviation, 2VM-NOWFM and Moree Golf Club.
The annual event raises thousands of dollars and draws more than 100 golfers to Moree golf course, and Emma encourages everyone to tee off for a great cause on June 1.
“The charity golf day is a fun way to support such a crucial service for small towns over a friendly game,” Emma said.
“I hope to see many people there supporting this fantastic service, because you never know when you or someone you know will need them.”
In February, Emma shared her story at the Tamworth Rescue Ball.
“I felt quite honoured when Kylie from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service reached out to me about sharing my story,” Emma said.
“It was a great chance for me to express my gratitude to the service, especially the crew who flew me from Moree to Newcastle on that fateful day.
“I’m still lost for words as to how special it was to meet some of the crew who helped save my life,” she said.
“I take every chance I get to promote the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and urge everyone to support them whenever they can.”
Emma’s parents, Steve and Jean Botfield, are forever grateful of the time-critical response from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service crew that cold July day in 2017.
“When I hear it go overhead I know it is changing someone else’s lives, as it did ours,” Jean said.
“It was lovely to have Emma’s story documented and to be able to publicly show support for the service that most definitely saved our girl’s life. We will be forever grateful.”
Jean said their daughter was not expected to survive the accident.
“Doctors delivered a grim prognosis, telling us if Emma survived she may not walk, talk or lead a normal life,” Jean said.
“Over the months, Emma underwent more surgery and treatments along with physical rehabilitation and cognitive therapy to relearn skills, and was also an inpatient at Rankin Park Rehabilitation Centre.
“Despite the uncertain prognosis, Emma’s strong determination helped her make a remarkable recovery and defy the doctors’ expectations,” Jean said.
