Moree hosts State lawn bowls play-offs

DOZENS of lawn-bowlers from across the north-west converged at Moree Services Club at the weekend to compete in pennants State play-offs.

There were 16 ladies across two teams and 36 men covering three teams, with bowlers travelling from Manilla, Wee Waa, Narrabri, Lightning Ridge and Inverell to compete.

Ladies division winners were the combined side from Lightning Ridge, Wee Waa and Narrabri.

Men’s division overall winners were Wee Waa, beating Narrabri on Saturday and Manilla on Sunday.

Moree Bowls Club president Wayne Tighe said the teams will now play off at Tamworth to decide who attends the State Finals, with a date and location to be advised.

“I’d like to thank Moree Services Club for supporting us, and helping host this important event on the bowls calendar,” Tighe said.

“And I would like to personally thank our wonderful group of volunteers who gave their time helping with catering, umpiring and administrative duties over such a busy weekend – it would not have been as successful without their support.”

Manilla team manager Ian Bennett said the Moree club went above and beyond.

“It’s been a great weekend and the Moree club have been fantastic hosts. The weather is never a problem because of this incredible shelter, but it’s been perfect anyway,” Bennett said.

“They have put on a terrific show for us, and we’ve got absolutely no complaints at all – and we’re not a winning team, so we can say that from the other side,” he laughed.

“But it’s been great, and the facilities are unbelievable for a country town. The whole set-up is fantastic, including the club’s motel where we stayed – it’s walking distance to the club.”

Patrons are encouraged to take to the greens for a game with a less competitive edge when barefoot bowls are played Wednesday evenings.

Barefoot bowls is a social, fun event where participants play lawn bowls – without the footwear.

As the weather warms up, social bowls during an enjoyable summer evening on nice soft carpet is the perfect mix for a little competitive fun.

Registration is needed by 6pm for a 7pm start. Cost per player is $10.
