Name: Karen Munn.
Age: 60.
Status: Married to Brendan. We have two daughters Elizabeth and Katherine, who both live and work in Southern NSW.
Current or past employment, retired or otherwise:
Sydpath pathology collection centre at the Moree Medical Centre since 1992.
How long have you lived in the Moree shire?
All my life. I was born and raised on a property in the Gurley district. I attended primary school in Narrabri and high school in Moree.
What part of the shire do you live?
I live in the village of Gurley and very much enjoy our small community. I commute into town four days a week.
Have you had any previous roles, either as an employee or volunteer in local, state or federal government?
No.
What are the main reasons you are standing for council?
To advocate for fair treatment of both rural and urban ratepayers.
Is this the first time you have stood for council?
Yes. My husband, Brendan, has previously served a term as a Councillor and suggest I put up my hand.
Are you standing alone or with a running mate(s)?
Alone.
What do you love most about Moree Plains Shire?
Having travelled extensively across New South Wales, I can appreciate the wonderful productive Shire we have here compared to others. The town of Moree is great, too. It’s great to walk down the street and see so many friendly faces and say ‘hello’ to so many people.
What do you think the main issues are in Moree that need addressing? Crime is a major concern. What are your views on this?
Crime is a major issue, but so is it in many other towns in New South Wales. Unfortunately, Moree has a stigma associated with crime. The current NSW government trial for repeat offenders is a step in the right direction. Country road maintenance is another major issue in getting agricultural produce to markets.
Do you think the current council is aiming in the right direction on various projects and/or issues?
I don’t have an informed opinion on what projects are underway.
How can the current council improve on what it is doing at the moment? Is money being spent on the right projects?
I think Council could become actively involved with attracting medicos to our town. This is a real concern for everyone.
Has the current council disappointed the people of Moree? If so, how?
The MAAC has been seen as an ongoing problem.
What local organisations are you involved with at the moment?
I am Moree Show Society secretary, Gurley Recreation Reserve Trust president and secretary-treasurer of the Gurley Rural Fire Service.
What are you pastimes, hobbies or passions?
I love doing crosswords. It keeps my brain active. I also enjoy getting away in the caravan with our fur babies when we have a chance.
Footnote: Questions to candidates differ slightly, given the mix is made up of current councillors seeking re-election, past councillors seeking re-election and first-timers seeking election.
