Walgett: Critical incident declared following death of a man during police operation

A critical incident investigation has been declared after the self-inflicted death of a man in Walgett. Just before 8pm yesterday, Monday 4, police were called to a property on Wimbledon Road, Walgett, following reports of a concern for welfare for a 59-year-old man.

Officers from Central North Police District conducted patrols of the property and a man was seen driving off towards the Castlereagh Highway.

However, neither the vehicle nor the man could be located

As part of inquiries, police attended a property on Castlereagh Highway north of Walgett just after 11pm and located the man in a vehicle.

The man drove off, colliding with a police vehicle. A pursuit was initiated before being terminated shortly after due to safety concerns.

Officers conducted patrols of the area.

However, neither the vehicle nor the man could be located.

At about 8.30am today, Tuesday, May 5, police attended a property on Castlereagh Highway north of Walgett, following reports the man’s vehicle had been sighted.

Officers from Central North Police District attended and located a 59-year-old man, armed with a firearm, near a vehicle.

Specialist resources attended to assist, and negotiators attempted to speak to the man.

Just before 11am, a firearm was discharged and officers treated the man for a self-inflicted wound. However, the could not be revived.

A crime scene has been established and a Critical Incident Team from Barrier Police District will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and oversighted by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
